Game Objective

Chess Ranger is a captivating logic puzzle that combines the strategic depth of chess with the challenge of a solitaire puzzle. Your mission is simple yet challenging: capture all pieces on the board until only a single piece remains. This seemingly straightforward goal requires careful planning and tactical thinking, as every move must be a capture move that eliminates another piece from the board.

Basic Rules

The rules of Chess Ranger are elegantly simple, making it accessible to players of all skill levels while still providing a satisfying challenge:

Pieces move as standard chess pieces: Each piece follows its traditional chess movement pattern - rooks move horizontally and vertically, bishops diagonally, queens combine both movements, knights jump in their distinctive L-shape, and kings move one square in any direction.
Only capture moves allowed: Unlike regular chess, you cannot move to an empty square. Every move must capture (remove) an opponent's piece from the board.
You may capture the king: In Chess Ranger, kings have no special protection - they can be captured just like any other piece.
Goal is one piece remaining: You win when exactly one piece remains on the board. The puzzle is solved!

Controls

Playing Chess Ranger is intuitive and straightforward. On desktop computers, use your mouse to click on any piece to select it - valid capture moves will be highlighted with a red pulse animation. Then click on a highlighted square to execute the capture. On mobile devices, simply tap pieces to select and tap highlighted squares to capture. The game also supports keyboard shortcuts: press 'R' to start a new game, 'U' to undo your last move, 'H' for a helpful hint, and 'M' to toggle sound effects.

Tips & Strategies

Mastering Chess Ranger requires developing strategic thinking and pattern recognition. Start by identifying pieces with limited mobility - these are often key to solving the puzzle efficiently. Plan your moves backward from the desired end position: which piece should remain, and what sequence of captures will leave it alone? Pay special attention to corner and edge pieces, as they often have restricted movement options that can make or break your solution. If you find yourself stuck, don't hesitate to use the undo feature to explore different approaches. Remember that not all puzzles may have a solution with your current board configuration, so sometimes starting fresh is the best strategy.

The 4×4 board is perfect for beginners to learn the mechanics, while the 5×5 and 6×6 boards provide intermediate challenges with more pieces and complex interactions.
