How to Play Chess
Chess is a two-player strategy board game played on a checkered board with 64 squares. Each player starts with 16 pieces: one king, one queen, two rooks, two knights, two bishops, and eight pawns.
Piece Movements
- King (♔/♚) - Moves one square in any direction. The most important piece!
- Queen (♕/♛) - Moves any number of squares horizontally, vertically, or diagonally.
- Rook (♖/♜) - Moves any number of squares horizontally or vertically.
- Bishop (♗/♝) - Moves any number of squares diagonally.
- Knight (♘/♞) - Moves in an "L" shape: two squares in one direction and one square perpendicular. Can jump over pieces.
- Pawn (♙/♟) - Moves forward one square (or two from starting position). Captures diagonally.
Game Controls
- Click a piece to select it
- Green dots show valid moves
- Click a highlighted square to move
- Red highlight indicates capture
Chess Strategy Tips
- Control the center - Place pieces to control d4, d5, e4, e5
- Develop pieces - Move knights and bishops before the queen
- Castle early - Protect your king within the first 10 moves
- Think ahead - Plan 2-3 moves in advance
