Number Bridges Game Introduction

Overview

Number Bridges, also known as Hashiwokakero or simply Hashi, is a classic Japanese logic puzzle. The goal is to connect all numbered islands on a grid using horizontal and vertical bridges, where each island's number indicates exactly how many bridges must connect to it. All islands must form a single connected group when the puzzle is complete.

Rules

  • Islands are circles containing a number from 1 to 8.
  • Bridges can only be drawn horizontally or vertically between two islands.
  • Each island's number must equal the total number of bridges connected to it.
  • A maximum of 2 bridges can connect any pair of adjacent islands.
  • Bridges cannot cross other bridges or pass through other islands.
  • All islands must be connected as one single group (no isolated clusters).

Controls

  • Click an island to select it. A golden glow indicates the selected island.
  • Click another island in the same row or column to create or cycle bridges between them.
  • Bridge cycling: 0 bridges, 1 bridge, 2 bridges, then back to 0.
  • Click the selected island again or click empty space to deselect.
  • Use Check to verify your current solution.
  • Use Hint to reveal one correct bridge connection.

Scoring

Track your progress by time. Solve puzzles faster on harder difficulties for a greater challenge. The timer starts when a new puzzle is generated and pauses when you complete it.

Tips

  • Start with islands whose number equals the maximum possible bridges. For example, a corner island with value 4 must have 2 bridges in each direction.
  • Islands with value 1 can only connect to one neighbor, which narrows down possibilities.
  • If an island has only one possible neighbor remaining, the bridge count is determined.
  • Watch for islands that would become isolated. Connectivity is a key constraint.
  • Use the Check button to find errors early before they cascade.
