Game Introduction

overview

Hitori is a number logic puzzle. You start with a filled grid and must shade selected cells so duplicate numbers disappear from every row and column.

rules

  • No number may appear more than once among unshaded cells in any row.
  • No number may appear more than once among unshaded cells in any column.
  • Shaded cells cannot touch horizontally or vertically.
  • All unshaded cells must remain connected as one group.

controls

  • Tap/click a cell to cycle clear -> shaded -> white mark.
  • Right-click to cycle in reverse.
  • Use Check to validate current progress.
  • Use Hint for one safe correction, or New Game to reset with a fresh board.

scoring

Better runs use fewer moves, less time, and fewer hints. Check helps detect contradictions early, while hint usage lowers your run quality.

tips

  • Start from rows/columns with many repeated numbers.
  • Avoid shading neighbors; black cells cannot touch orthogonally.
  • After each shading decision, confirm white-cell connectivity.
  • If stuck, use Check first to locate conflicts before spending a hint.

faq

Can shaded cells touch diagonally?

Yes. Diagonal contact is allowed. Only horizontal and vertical touching is forbidden.

Does every duplicate force a shaded cell?

Usually yes, but you must choose cells carefully so connectivity and adjacency rules stay valid.

Why did Check fail even after removing duplicates?

Either two black cells are touching, or the white cells split into separate groups.
